The Kid Tough Waterproof Digital Camera from Fisher Price is a tough, rugged toy camera and easily stands up to rough preschooler use. Dual handle grips and a two-eye view finder ensures that it is easy for kids to take great pictures. One small complaint is the positioning of the button to take pictures. It is on the front which can be a little awkward for small hands. It has image resolution of 1.3 or 0.3 megapixel for adequate quality 4"x6" prints, auto-flash, 64mb of flash memory for storing up to 500 pictures, USB cable for computer connection.
This turned out to be one of the best toy purchases I've made. My three year old son doesn't have a lot of interest in most toys; instead he plays with anything that he can get his hands on and often these are breakable things. Now we have the best of both worlds, a working digital camera that's stood up to the best my son can do. He has the most fun when his friend is round as they run around taking pictures of each other going "Say cheese!" My son has great fun looking at the pictures and likes to send them to his grandparents to show them what he has been doing.
This is a toy as much as a camera so it goes without saying the picture quality is poor, however if you read the manual you can increase the quality quite easily. Having said that the quality is certainly good for kids who, in fact, will be delighted with it. Transferring pictures off the camera is easy, just plug a USB cable into the camera and your computer and you can view the pictures as soon as they are found and no extra software needed. Battery life is not so good, and it is advisable to use rechargeable batteries. A battery charger is a must for parents with children of all ages.
My son has seen the promotional video for this camera and has now put his own camera through the 'test'. It has been dropped on the kitchen floor tiles, rolled down the stairs, dropped in the fish pond and sat on in the bath. It has also been to the beach and dropped in saltwater and had coke spilt over it. No problem at all, the camera works just fine, and my son is really pleased with it. If you are thinking of buying this for your daughter then you will be pleased to know that it is available in pink as well as blue.
Pictures and cameras, be they either from mobile phones or small digital cameras, not to mention video are important tools for today's children. Introducing children to photography at an early age is a good idea and can expand their interests. What better way then to give young children an almost indestructible camera to learn with. Later on they can progress to a 'real' camera once they have mastered handling this camera. So all in all this is a useful and hard wearing toy. It can be tough on batteries so be prepared and make sure that you have a battery charger and two sets of AA rechargeable batteries and your child will be kept amused for ages.
